Hastings Castle (1066)
Hastings Castle was built by Normans before the Battle of Hastings. After landing with his army on English soil in 1066, William the Conqueror immediately ordered 3 prefabricated wooden motte and bailey castles to be built to fortify the South coast including Hastings. It was later rebuilt in stone. The cliff collapsed in February 1287 and the wall and the keep fell into the English Channel. The castle was excavated in the 1820s and it became a Victorian tourist attraction. In 1951 it was acquired by the Hastings Corporation.
